Under a program that began in 1985, the European Capital of Culture is a city chosen by countries within the European Union to hold the title for the duration of one year, during which time the city showcases its cultural life and cultural development. Holding the title of European Capital of Culture provides cities with an opportunity to invigorate the cultural life of the city and to redefine how they are perceived internationally.

With architectural marvels such as the Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace, and Hagia Sophia, Istanbul delights travelers with one of the richest cultural histories of any city in the world. Controlled at various points in its history by Romans, Crusaders, Ottomans, British, the secularizing Ataturk, and finally as part of the democratic nation of Turkey, Istanbul has an incredible variety of historical and cultural sites. Today, Istanbul is increasingly seen as one of the “hippest” cities in the world, with a booming new urban culture of style that keeps the newest bars and clubs pulsing and is making its voice heard in the international fashion world.
