Sakkara’s Stairway to Heaven

I’ve only imagined what the stairway to heaven actually looked like. After listening to Led Zeppelin sing about some lady climbing it I believe I have found it in Egypt. When I first arrived in Egypt I thought that the Sphinx and the Great pyramid would be amazing sites, but there was a hidden treasure that I recommend everyone must see, the Step Pyramid. Located in Sakkara the Step Pyramid is the oldest of Egypt’s pyramids. At dusk the wind whispers as you sit in silence and count six steps that lead to the sky, the steps get smaller as they ascend against the blue background. Is that how easy it is to get to heaven? And I think of the lyrics, “There’s a feeling I get when I look to the west, and my spirit is crying for leaving.” I find myself breathless. The Step Pyramid is uniquely constructed, different than the precise form of the other pyramids. Did anyone ever try to climb this massive monument? And yet it is imperfect in a perfect way. The lines do not match up exactly, and it looks like a mound of clay about to crumble. Travelling Egypt is more than making a foreign friend, eating flatbread and hummus, or buying a stuffed camel; it’s about the feeling that there is something more majestic, something more than meets the eye. If you find yourself going to Egypt anytime soon, I suggest you go to the Step Pyramid and you will be “sure that all that glitters is(n’t) gold.”
