A Week of Beaches and Food

As soon as you land in Agadir airport you are greeted by a hubbub of people. Situated on the west coast of Morocco, the town of Agadir is a major winter sun destination. The town also pulls in lots of summer holidaymakers whom are  looking for sun, sea and sand. The area is well known for its beaches and architecture, especially the Kasbah situated on the hill above the city. We booked our holiday with OnTheBeach, who allowed us to choose our hotel and flights separately, giving us a great amount of flexibility. We opted for self-catering accommodation near the beach and club area, which meant that we were able to explore the surrounding area at our leisure.

Agadir is a fishing and commercial port and, if you are feeling adventurous, you can have a walk down to the fish market, where you can pick up the best fillets of locally caught Sea Bass. The port is a hive of activity with lots of shouting, animals and people loading and unloading crates. However, if you are sensitive to strong smells a trip to the port might not be the best idea.

There are several other markets which are worth exploring; at these spots you can buy olives, spices,  and cheeses. While you are here you should take the opportunity to buy a tagine pot and  cook the very famous Moroccan dish named after the earthenware pot.

The beach is the main attraction in this area. The long stretch of sand runs for miles and the boardwalk is lined with cafes and restaurants. If you venture to the north side of the beach there’s a newly renovated restaurant, you can sit here in the evening looking out to sea. The waiters are friendly and the food is excellent.

The beach area is very busy at night, especially during Ramadan, all the local people gather on the seafront to chat and there is even the opportunity to sit in the square and watch a Bollywood movie.
