Village Feeling, City Flair

Despite how often I visit, I tend to forget the quaintness and warmth of Maine municipalities. These qualities are simply a given to a Maine resident. For those of you who aren’t from Maine and can readily access this large evergreen state, I encourage you to have a journey. Pick any location: north, on the coast, in the mountains, and you will find beauty and what it means to be from Maine. Recently, I chose Brunswick, the home to Bowdoin College and so much more. Brunswick is a community steeped in history, rich in cultural heritage and full of scenic beauty. The flavor of downtown Brunswick is a picturesque New England town. Some have jokingly referred to downtown Brunswick as “Bedford Falls,” a nod to the classic James Stewart movie called It’s a Wonderful Life. A visit to downtown will reveal our version of the home-town movie theater. During the summer you might find a community band playing on the town Mall – a large grassy park in the center of town that has served as a meeting and community center for generations. In the fall, students gather there to enjoy the last of the season’s warmth. No doubt this spot is ideal for snowball fights come winter.

Today, with the Androscoggin River winding along the north and Maine’s beautiful Casco Bay to the south, Downtown Brunswick is blessed with a beauty that draws visitors near and far. However, downtown Brunswick has “city flair”, as much as Maine can offer. What kind of food are you in the mood for? How about Italian, Thai, Indian, German, Mexican, or American? Do you like to shop (I do, I do!)? Specialty boutiques line the streets. Entertainment? How about the only professional, musical stock theatre remaining in the United States? There are many service businesses as well, quietly carrying on their trade, hidden away from the retail side of town. I can tell you about the merits of this quiet little town with so much to offer, but it’d be best to see it for yourself.
