Unique Parties on Phi Phi Island
At about 10 p.m. we left our Thai friends at the bungalows to venture into the center of Phi Phi Don to join the ongoing summer party. Although it was low season (June) there were tons of backpackers just beginning their summer break. As we walked towards the center of the island, more people joined us in the streets heading towards the Apache Bar. The Apache Bar is a loud boisterous club that boasts an intricate drag show. We took some seats at a table on the second level, ordered a bucket of Sangsom (the infamous Thai Whiskey that has a Facebook page named after it) and coke and settled in to enjoy the show. The Thais are gorgeous people and the drag queens (more likely transsexuals) are incredibly authentic looking. They took the stage and the audience joined in dancing on the sidelines. After the show, the music blared louder and the liquor flowed bucket by bucket. Backpackers mingled with the expat crowd, the drag queens, and other backpackers. The party at Apache bar wound down relatively early and the crowd made its way towards Reggae Bar. Reggae Bar’s claim to fame is its Thai Boxing ring where tourists can challenge each other or a Thai boxer to a fight. The winner of the fight gets… wait for it… a free bucket of liquor. Shouts, and smoke filled the air as we watched a Canadian get his ass kicked by a Thai, and then an American fight an Australian. Numerous buckets in, we moved up to Tin Tin’s, a late nightclub above the ring that had an ambient house d.j. We danced way into the wee hours and then stumbled our way back to our bungalows knowing that the next day we would recover by laying on the beach and swimming in the sea.
