The Little Mermaid
In 1837, a writer by the name of Hans Christian Anderson came up with a tale about a young mermaid who was willing to give up her life under the sea for the love of a handsome prince. Of course these days the story is probably better known as the 1989 animated Disney movie, The Little Mermaid, with the talking lobster and the cute ‘Under the sea’ song. But Copenhagen has more interest in Anderson’s version, and in 1909 Carl Jacobsen – the man who founded beer brand Carlsberg – commissioned this statue to commemorate it. It now sits on a rock in Copenhagen harbour at Langelinie. The statue has had its fair share of troubles over the years; the head has been cut off repeatedly and it has been vandalised with paint. But despite all this it is a big tourist draw. The statue is free to visit.
